구(phrase) 란?

구란 둘 이상의 단어가 모여 명사, 형용사, 부사 등 하나의 품사로 쓰이는 어구를 말합니다. 각각 명사구, 형용사구, 부사구라고 하지요.

명사구: 문장 속에서 명사처럼 주어, 목적어, 보어로 쓰인다.
To study English is fun.
My hobby is playing the piano.
She didn't know what to do.

2. 형용사구: 문장 속에서 형용사처럼 명사를 꾸미거나 보어로 쓰인다.
The boy with brown eyes is very cute.
I have homeworks to do.
Cars parked illegally will be removed.


3. 부사구: 부사처럼 동사, 형용사, 부사, 절/문장을 수식한다.
She is hard to get along with.
We are sorry to hear that.
He went to bed at 9.
I was too tired to call back.
Being ill, she stayed at home. (분사구문도 부사구의 일종)

 

절(cluase)이란?

절이란 주어와 동사를 갖추고 문장의 일부를 이루면서 명사, 형용사, 부사 등의 기능을 하는 문장요소를 말합니다. 구와 마찬가지로, 절도 명사절, 형용사절, 부사절로 나눌 수 있습니다.

1. 명사절: 문장 속에서 명사처럼 주어, 목적어, 보어로 쓰인다. 
It is natural that he didn't like the dish.
Whether she comes or not doesn't bother me.
What I want to say is family is important.
Be careful of what you say.

2. 형용사절: 문장 속에서 형용사처럼 명사를 꾸미거나 보어로 쓰인다.
A person who breaks plans all the time cannot be trusted.
Here is the doll that she has been looking for.
I live in Seoul where it is the capital city of South Korea.


3. 부사절: 부사처럼 동사, 형용사, 부사, 절/문장을 수식한다.
Could you wait until I come back?
When you were in Greece, I got married.
If you want to pass the exam, you should study harder.
